Adult Witch Costume
If you want a scary costume this Halloween then why not dress as a witch. Witches have long been associated with Halloween. In fact, legend has it that witches gather twice a year, on April 30 (Eve of May Day) and October 31 (All Hallow’s Eve). They would arrive on their broomsticks to celebrate at a party given by the devil.
However, there are many types of witches who practice their craft for good as well as evil. For example, there are kitchen witches who practice by home and hearth, mainly dealing with the practical side of religion, magic and the elements. Wicca witches are usually healers and work with plants, flowers, trees, gnomes and fairies. Eclectic witches don’t follow a particular tradition and learn from many different systems.
So, if you fancy casting spells and enchanting all those around you, then try an adult witch costume. One of the favorites is the character Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West from the Musical, Wicked. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, set before the arrival of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. The costume comes with a full length black gown, witch hat, sash and stick on black fingernails. Just add some green make up to your face and you will scare the wits out of everyone. The costume is called Wicked Witch Ultimate Elite Collection Costume and can be seen on the left.
Another costume which is guaranteed to impress is the Maleficent Witch costume.
Maleficent, was the evil sorceress and villainess of Sleeping Beauty. She is so overwhelmingly powerful, ruthless and devious and does whatever she can to achieve her goals. Her costume is absolutely splendid with a long black and purple dress with attached stand-up collar and headpiece. The sides of the head piece are supposed to resemble the wings of a bat and the top as horns of the devil. The ends of the flowing robe are supposed to resemble flames.
There’s a great one called Sorceress Young Adult Costume which I particularly like. It has a purple jagged edge dress with a shorter front. There’s a sheer black shredded top layer. It has an incredible matching witch’s hat, a large eyeball medallion and an eyeball hand accessory. It’s shown here on the left.
I think we’re all fascinated by witches and the supernatural. Who hasn’t had a wish that they could cast a spell? I used to watch Bewitched when I was a kid and always wished I could do the things Samantha could. Of course, she was a very modern witch – no outfits like you see on this page.
I love the worlds of magic and witchcraft. The Harry Potter books and films have brought magic into great popularity again. So much so that there are lots of Christian websites warning of the dangers of the Harry Potter books because they think that they lead children to witchcraft. Fortunately, most of us can just enjoy wearing the costumes and having a great time. Personally, I think stories about magic, wizards and witches are great for kids’ imagination.
Witchcraft is very popular these days under the name of Wicca, a neopagan way of life popularized by Gerald Gardner in 1954. All lineages stemming from Gardner are referred to as Gardnerian Wicca. Since then many groups have branched off and introduced new ideas into their system of witchcraft.
